5 New Year’s resolutions for the home in 2019

2019 is here, and while that can mean a brand new you it can also mean a brand new start for your home. The possibilities are endless, so start as you mean to go on with these new year’s resolutions for your home.

1. Clear out the clutter

Without even realising we’re doing it, we all collect a whole mountain of clutter throughout the year that clogs up our homes. So as we head into 2019, take time out to streamline your home and get rid of anything you don’t really need anymore. Be ruthless, and remember to donate and recycle as much as possible.

2. Cut your energy use

OK, so this might not sound like it’s going to make a big difference to your home life, but when you start thinking about how you can save energy in the home it can really change your life. Turn off lights, close doors, turn the taps off when you’re brushing your teeth and ensure your home is perfectly insulated. Not only will you feel better about doing your bit for the environment, these quick and simple moves will also save you a surprising amount of money over the course of a year.

3. Freshen up your smells

We all play music and decorate to set the mood in our homes, but what about how our homes smell? Smell is often an overlooked sense when it comes to sorting out your interiors and can completely transform how spaces feel. Scented candles are one way you can introduce smells to your home, but incense, fresh flowers, cooking and diffusers also work well to make your home scent-sational.

4. Reduce, reuse, recycle

Help the environment by following this simple mantra and you’ll be amazed at the difference you can make. Swap out everything disposable like takeaway coffee cups and shopping bags for reusable options and try and reuse packaging as much as possible. Buy fresh produce from markets and greengrocers which use less packaging and encourage the whole family to recycle as much as possible.

5. Add some greenery

Freshen up your interiors with some greenery — there are so many options! For those who like things to stay fresh, flowers not only look great but smell great. Houseplants are a more hands-off alternative, while you can keep things practical by growing your own herb garden on your kitchen windowsill — perfect for a year of great cooking.
